February 2012] Following elections, the leader of the majority party in the Regional Assembly is designated Chief
Commissioner.
Regional Assembly [unicameral] (21 Seats) Members are elected by direct popular vote using the mixed member proportional system - 12 in multi-member constituencies (local regions) using
the first-past-the-post system, 6 through party-list proportional representation (island regions), and an additional
3 seats allocated through party-list proportional representation to ensure a majority of 50 percent plus one of the total
number of seats; members serve 5-year terms.
