Political System: Democracy
President: Rajkeswur Purryag (MLP) [since 21 July 2012] The President is elected by the National Assembly for a 5-year term.
Prime Minister: Navin Ramgoolam (MLP) [AS] [since 05 July 2005] The Prime Minister is appointed by the President and responsible to the National Assembly.
National Assembly [unicameral] (70 Seats) 62 members are elected by direct popular vote in multi-member constituencies (20 three-member constituencies on Mauritius and one two-member constituency on the island of Rodrigues) using the Block Vote system. In addition, 8 Members are appointed from a list of unsuccessful candidates under a "best loser" system designed to provide "balanced" ethnic and political representation; members serve 5-year terms.
