In July 1985, the government announced that National Assembly elections
would take place in September. Opposition parties, claiming that they had been denied access to the voters' roll, decided
to boycott the election. At the time of nomination in August 1985, only the ruling Basotho National Party (BNP) fielded candidates,
who were declared elected unopposed without an election being held.
