Political Profile
Political System: Restricted Democratic Practice
President: Lansana Conté (PUP) [since 03 April 1984;
seized power in 1984 military coup, elected 1993, re-elected 1998 and
2003] The President is elected by direct popular vote for a 7-year term. The
President’s term was extended from five to seven years in a 2001 referendum. Electoral
System: Two Round (Run-off).
Prime Minister: Lansana Kouyaté [since 01 March
2007] The Prime Minister is appointed by the President.
National Assembly [unicameral]
(114 Seats) Members are elected by direct popular vote through parallel systems -
38 in single-member constituencies using the first-past-the-post (simple majority) system and 76 in one national constituency
using the party-list proportional representation system; members serve 5-year terms.
